Urns & Ferns - Garfield Park Conservatory

Open Lands

Sharon had multiple installations in the Fern Room at the Garfield Park Conservatory in 2005. She had five pieces from the "Biophilia" series" interacting with the real ferns. She also filled antique cages with ghostly white cast plaster fish and plant ovaries along with cast glass plant forms. On one of the Amazonian expeditions that she was a part of over forty new species of fish were discovered in a period of just six weeks. When interviewed by staff reporter Karen Klages of the Chicago Tribune, Sharon was quoted to say, "I think most people are surprised by how many new species of fish are yet to be discovered. A new species is like a gift to the planet"!" The analogy of ghost fish that is embodied in the work points to the fact of the sheer numbers of species destroyed before they have had a chance to be discovered.
